The First World War battlefields in North Macedonia are some of the most well-preserved in Europe. Under Yugoslavia, the area where the battlefields are located was a forbidden zone because of their proximity to the border with Greece. Following independence, restrictions were lifted and free movement was permitted. I am constantly exploring the battlefields and re-discovering trenches, bunkers and dugouts hidden in the bush. Whether you are a seasoned battlefield visitor or this is your first time following in the footsteps of those who served during the First World War, you will have an unforgettable experience.

Planning your study

The Macedonian Campaign has proven to be an interesting study for military units. I often hear the comment “It is hard to believe that this was part of the First World War because it was such a different experience for the soldiers who served here.” Comparing and contrasting warfighting on the Western Front and in the Balkans, based on the terrain alone, is an interesting topic in itself.

The key to planning a successful battlefield study is to clearly understand your commander’s intent, establish a clear aim and learning objectives. This is a critical step for getting your study approved and will assist in developing the program and supporting materials.  I will provide you with a custom package of materials including exercise reader and map book.

Once you have clarified your aim and objectives, we will work together on other details required to get approval. As I am physically on the ground in-country, I can provide you with recommendations for accommodation, meals and transport services to support your study.

During the study itself, in addition to providing the historical context, I will deal with local service providers to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Individual and Group Tours

Whether you wish to make a pilgrimage to visit the grave of an ancestor or to experience the battlefields where they served, I will create a tailor-made tour based on your specific requirements.

Attempting to visit the battlefields of the Macedonian Campaign without a guide can be costly, frustrating and in some areas dangerous. The battlefields are not mapped nor is there signage to guide you.
